SHRI SATIJI BUYER GUIDE

Warehouse Building Planning: Storage, Clear Height, Docks and Expansion

A warehouse should be designed around storage density and movement efficiency before the structural concept is locked.

Storage system

Racking type, stacking method and product characteristics.

Clear height

Usable vertical storage versus equipment and fire-system clearances.

Aisles

Forklift turning, pedestrian safety and picking movement.

Vehicle flow

Truck entry, turning and queueing around the site.

Loading / unloading

Dock, shutter and apron requirements.

Ventilation / insulation

Product sensitivity and indoor environment expectations.

Future capacity

Extension direction and potential change in storage system.

Coordinate storage, movement and structure before detailed design.

Warehouse efficiency depends on more than total floor area. Racking layout, aisle widths, clear height, forklift turning, dock positions, truck circulation and dispatch flow should be considered together. Floor performance, drainage, ventilation, daylight and fire-protection interfaces can also influence the building plan.

If automation, solar installation, mezzanine storage or future expansion is possible, record those requirements before the structural concept is locked. A useful project brief should show the storage system, approximate pallet or material flow, door and dock requirements, preferred clear zones and expected growth direction. That gives the engineering team better inputs for comparing clear-span, multi-span and expansion-ready options.
